Educating the Decision Makers

The Virginia League of Conservation Voters Education Fund (VALCV-EF) will host its fourth annual Legislative Retreat for General Assembly members and their families March 16-17, 2012, at the Center for the Constitution at James Madison’s Montpelier.

Legislators will received updates on current local and state conservation issues with VALCV-EF staff and a variety of special guest presenters; make local relevant site visits; and enjoy the amazing grounds and offerings of Montpelier.

We wish to express our appreciation to the Campbell Foundation, our General Assembly guests, and our Board and staff for their continued support in making this annual event such a fun and educational success.  You may view our 2011 Legislative Retreat in our photo section.

TAKE ACTION!

Help add volume to conservation’s voice in Virginia by joining with your neighbors on your local Legislative Contact Team (LCT).

LCTs bring activists together to lobby their State Senators and Delegates as a team before the General Assembly in your local community and during the General Assembly in Richmond at the Capitol. As constituents, your voices rise above the rest. Help win conservation victories in 2012!

This summer the Virginia League of Conservation Voters Education Fund teamed up with the Virginia Conservation Network and the Virginia Chapter of the Sierra Club to host our annual Legislative Contact Team workshop series for volunteers and activists. We hosted workshops in Arlington, Richmond, Harrisonburg, Roanoke, Virginia Beach and Charlottesville. Over 300 activists attended to learn more about the proposed lifting of Virginia’a ban on uranium mining and how to establish effective relationships with their elected officials.

Throughout the fall and into the 2012 Virginia General Assembly volunteers who attend these workshops meet with their elected officials to discuss critical conservation issues. See important related events below.

Conservation Lobby Day will be held at the State Capitol on January 23, 2012!

Choose Clean Water – Chesapeake Bay Coalition

VALCV-EF is a part of the Choose Clean Water coalition that seeks to bring together people and organizations in six states and the nation’s capital whose streams and rivers flow to the Chesapeake Bay.  Together we are calling for real federal leadership, because it is time to stop the needless and costly pollution that is choking our waterways and hurting our wildlife, fisheries and economy.

We are focused on three major opportunities to restore and protect Virginia’s waterways:

  1. Ensure that Virginia’s and the Environmental Protection Agency’s Cleanup Plans do just that: clean up our impaired rivers and streams. See thelatest news on landmark EPA “pollution diet” for the Chesapeake Bay.
  2. Support federal legislation that will support local and state clean up efforts. Read our letter to Virginia’s Congressional Delegation regarding The Chesapeake Clean Water and Ecosystem Restoration Act (S.1816/H.R.3852).
  3. Support President Obama’s Chesapeake Bay Executive Order #1350.
